Cold Enough for Snow by Jessica Au

Cold Enough for Snow by Jessica Au

Cold Enough for Snow by Jessica Au is a brief novel (coming in at under 100 pages) yet emotionally potent. At surface level it is a simple tale of a mother and daughter who meet in Japan for a holiday. However, bubbling away underneath the surface is a story about two women, the lives they lead, and how women of different generations relate to one another. Au’s storytelling compliments brevity, she writes intentionally, delicately, and leaves many words unspoken

There is a certain haze that permeates the novel, both emotionally and physically as fog and mist cast a shroud over Tokyo’s urban landscapes. The two women travel at length together yet most of the story is told through the daughter’s internal world as she reflects on her own life as well as her mother’s. She makes poignant observations but does not choose to share these with her mother, self-conscious of bringing her complex and overwrought internal world to life.

Strikingly simple yet brimming with life and love, Cold Enough for Snow speaks to generations of people searching for their own identities through themselves and also through their parents and loved ones. It lends itself to being read in a single sitting on a cosy afternoon, and allows the reader to enjoy it as they like – with or without the layers.
