Bush Friends - Louisa Meredith - Card

Cards, Wraps & Stationery

Louisa Anne Meredith (1812-1895),
miniaturist, watercolourist, poet, author and botanist.

Louisa Anne Meredith (née Twamley) was born in Birmingham and migrated to Australia with her husband Charles in 1839. They first settled in Bathurst, and then moved to Tasmania where they lived for many years.

Her love of nature and the environment was expressed through her poetry and watercolour studies of Australian bush flora and fauna. Her wildflower drawings won medals in national and overseas exhibitions. In recognition of her 'distinguished literary and artistic services' to the colony, the Tasmanian government granted her a pension in 1884 – the first such acknowledgement for an Australian writer.
