See What I Have Done by Sarah Schmidt

See What I Have Done by Sarah Schmidt

See What I Have Done is an imaginative re-telling of the violent murders of Andrew and Abby Borden. Though the case is 100 years old, the mystery and suspicion surrounding their daughter Lizzie, captivates even still. Sarah Schmidt uses the known facts of the case, while also playing with many presumptions about it—mostly that Lizzie was the murderer—to paint a picture of the likely events.

The story follows the murders and their aftermaths from the perspectives of their daughter Lizzie; her sister, Emma; the maid Bridget; and a drifter, Benjamin.

While this is Schmidt’s debut novel, it is strongly written, and Schmidt’s mastery of language means that the switch between the four character perspectives is seamless. Each has their own voice and none hinder the narrative.

Schmidt’s debut is so powerful that despite already knowing the ending, I found myself rushing to the finish for answers, desperate for meaning in other people’s actions. Not for those with a fragile disposition, this book finds thrills in the complex and often abstruse decisions of the human mind.
