Museum of Modern Love by Heather Rose

Museum of Modern Love by Heather Rose

The Museum of Modern Love is much less about love than the title might suggest. The art world in which this story is set, and the history that it builds can seem overwhelming in concept, but Heather Rose does an incredible job of expressing the intent of the art, and the emotion of it, echoing the experience of the way art can move you, sometimes inexplicably. While this book is fiction, it uses some public figures to weave its tale, most prolific is of course Marina Abramovic. Her simple piece The Artist is Present, where she sits silently across from a single member of the public and holds their gaze, reflects the mood of the book as each character opens themselves up to the reader and tells their tale, asking for nothing in return, and especially asking for no judgement. As a reader we are expected only to feel and maybe understand, while the author reminds us that every life has moments of turmoil and there will always be more than we can possibly know to other people’s lives.
