In 1773, one hundred and eighty Scottish Highland emigrants, including 80 children, clambered aboard the Hector at Loch Broom. They had paid for their passage, land grants at Pictou in Nova Scotia and a year's food supply. On this "voyage from hell" was George McLeod, aged five, who was travelling with his two brothers, Donald and Angus. Seven generations later, George's descendants are thriving in Australia and the United States of America, heirs to the DNA, the "tartan helix", passed on by George, his son Angus, Samuel, son of Angus and Lydia Tupper, and Samuel's eldest daughter, Lily Agnes McLeod.

This 'novel' is an imaginative reconstruction of their survival, based on hundreds of jigsaw pieces of genealogical data, and is a microcosm of the migration saga and survival of an indomitable race, the Highland Scots.
