The Hate Race by Maxine Beneba Clarke

The Hate Race by Maxine Beneba Clarke

The Hate Race has made stir in the literary reviews, finding itself shortlisted for the 2017 Stella Prize for good reason. Maxine Beneba Clarke’s memoir tells a familiar story of growing up in suburban Australia. But as a person of Afro-Caribbean decent, her childhood was plagued by racism and intolerance in a way that, for many Australians, was not. On my reading, this novel felt like a scientific experiment;  all variables of her school and early life are relatively average — except for her race and skin-colour in a very white community and the consequences of this slight variance are more than significant. In her beautiful poetic style, Maxine Beneba Clarke’s book remains devastating, uncomfortable, funny and insightful all at once.
