Barbed Wire and Cherry Blossoms by Anita Heiss

Barbed Wire and Cherry Blossoms by Anita Heiss

Barbed Wire and Cherry Blossoms is a fictional account of the very real Japanese Prisoner of War break-out in Cowra during World War II. While the lovers at the centre of this story are fictional, their relationship serves to counter the reality of the hostility between nations at the time. The love between Mary, a young Indigenous girl, and Hiroshi, an escaped Japanese soldier, acts as a gentle reminder of the misconceptions which can be held, and how these myths are broken down when discovering cultures other than our own. The book is set in a time passed, however the author deals with issues which are just as relevant for our modern world.
