While writing Burial Rites Hannah Kent was researching old newspapers for news of Agnes’ trial in the UK and she stumbled across a fascinating court case that took place in Ireland at the same time — it is this court case she has turned to now as inspiration for her new novel The Good People. While this new tale shares some of the flavour of Burial Rites — a dark and mysterious landscape full of superstition & gossip — The Good People sustains more mystery about where the story will lead. This tale dives deep into the rich folklore of Irish Fairies — a healer who has the fairy touch; a grandmother struggling with the care of a sick child; a small town looking for someone to blame for mysterious happenings in a hard season. It’s a quick read, and a great idea for a book group.
